Ilex crenata 'Sky Pencil', also known as a Japanese Holly, is a slow-growing, narrow upright evergreen shrub. Dense, glossy, dark green boxwood-like leaves without the sharp, spiny edges of traditional hollies. Small (1/4 inch), dull, greenish white fragrant flowers in spring that form in clusters of 1 to 3 that can produce black berries in fall. Very useful for a dwarf vertical presence. 'Sky Pencil' is an all-female cultivar which needs a male variety nearby as a pollenizer, in order to produce berries.
