A botanical marvel
The world-renowned Flora Wonder Arboretum traces its roots back to 1980, when founder Talon Buchholz embarked on a journey to create a remarkable collection of trees. He purchased the property in stages and initiated the collection in 1981, beginning with six Japanese maples from J.D. Vertrees — some of which still thrive within its grounds.

To support the collection, Buchholz & Buchholz Nursery was established, fostering a mutually beneficial relationship that endures to this day.
Mr. Buchholz and his team travel the globe to study and procure plants, with numerous renowned nurseries and collections sourcing plant material from the Flora Wonder Arboretum.

How the collection began
1980
Founder Talon Buchholz sets out to create a remarkable collection of trees, purchasing the property in stages.
1981
The collection is initiated with six Japanese maples from J.D. Vertrees — some still thrive within the arboretum's grounds today.
Today
Buchholz & Buchholz Nursery supports the collection, its team travels the globe, and renowned nurseries and collectors worldwide source plant material from Flora Wonder.
What began as a hobby has evolved into a profound way of life.
A global collection
Plants from the Best Corners of the World
Home to thousands of plant species and cultivars from all seven continents, the arboretum invites a global botanical journey — from the Atlas Cedar of North Africa to the Dove Tree of Asia, each corner of the world is represented. The collection includes noteworthy species, natural and intentional hybrids, and selected cultivars obtained through purchase, trade, donation, and discovery.
Notable specimens
Wollemi Pine
Australia — akin to a living dinosaur, recently discovered near Sydney and now distributed where hardy, offering a glimpse into ancient ecosystems.
Giant Redwood
North America — towering in the Sierra foothills of California, now grown across continents with cultivars in various shapes and colors.
Monkey Puzzle Tree
South America — a curious favorite from Chile, popular in Victorian times and recognizable even to schoolchildren.

We supply lining-out stock to wholesale growers and specimen plant material to premium garden centers and landscapers across the United States and Canada.
The name
“Flora,” the Roman goddess of plants, and “Wonder,” derived from German — together an evocative name that testifies to the awe inspired by the natural world.
