Acer palmatum 'Fireball', is a dwarf deciduous tree that can serve as a large shrub. The new growth emerges as a bright fiery red in spring and summer. The leaves remain small and are deeply dissected with some leaves having the shortened and rounded inter-lobe feature of a witch's broom. As the leaves mature they trade their bright reds with deep maroons which contrast brilliantly with the bright new growth in the late spring and summer. Some green-red tones appear by late spring, creating a wonderful contrast of colors. In the fall, this Japanese maple will light up your yard when its leaves transform to a bright fire-engine red. This tree was originally discovered as a witch's broom by David Verkade's father, John Verkade in the 1980's. Once well established, this tree can take full sun very well!
